App State's 2026 football season is underway.

And there is still plenty ahead.

The Mountaineers opened September with Maine, East Carolina and Charlotte before turning toward a schedule filled with in-state competition, Sun Belt rivals and several games that could have a major impact on the conference race.

As of September 22, no remaining App State opponent sits in the current AP Top 25. James Madison, however, is receiving AP votes, and rankings can change quickly once conference play gets moving.

So rather than watching one number next to an opponent's name, these are the games App State fans should have circled.

September 26: App State at NC State

This one is different before the teams even take the field.

App State and NC State are separated by a few hours of highway but occupy very different parts of the college football landscape.

The Mountaineers head to Raleigh on September 26 for their final nonconference game of the regular season.

For App State fans, any opportunity to play an ACC opponent from North Carolina carries extra interest.

It is an in-state matchup.

It is a road trip plenty of fans can realistically make.

And it gives App State another opportunity to measure itself outside the Sun Belt before conference play takes over.

October 10: Old Dominion Comes to Boone for Homecoming

Then the schedule returns to The Rock.

Old Dominion visits Boone on October 10 for Homecoming, bringing App State alumni back to campus for one of the busiest weekends of the fall.

Homecoming is bigger than the game.

October 16: App State at Coastal Carolina

Six days later, conference play gets more interesting.

App State heads to Coastal Carolina for a Friday-night matchup.

Geographically, Boone and Conway could hardly feel more different.

Mountains versus coast.

But the programs have become familiar Sun Belt opponents, and nationally televised weeknight conference games have a way of producing memorable moments.

October 22: James Madison Comes to The Rock

This may be the Boone date with the biggest circle around it.

James Madison visits Kidd Brewer Stadium on Thursday, October 22, for Family Weekend.

The game is scheduled for national television on ESPNU. As of the September 20 AP poll, JMU is not ranked but is receiving votes.

It is also a quick turnaround after App State's Friday road game against Coastal Carolina.

Thursday night.

National television.

Family Weekend.

A conference opponent drawing national attention.

That has the ingredients of a big night at The Rock.

October 31: App State at Georgia Southern

You do not need a national ranking to explain this one.

App State and Georgia Southern have history.

Both programs built national reputations at the FCS level before becoming Sun Belt opponents, and the rivalry has followed them into the FBS era.

This year's meeting lands on Halloween in Statesboro.

For longtime App State fans, Georgia Southern rarely needs additional marketing.

You already know.

What Other Home Games Remain?

After James Madison, App State returns to Boone twice more.

Georgia State comes to The Rock on November 7 for Heroes Day, followed by ULM on November 21 for Senior Day.

Those late-season games can take on more importance depending on the Sun Belt standings.

They also bring a very different Boone experience than September football.

Think colder air.

Earlier sunsets.
